Recipe | Cocoa Orange Barbecue Sauce

Today is Valentine’s Day.

The ex-manfriend texted me and wished me a Happy Valentine’s Day.  With kissyface emojis.  Ugh.

Would have been funnier if they spelled ‘trying’ correctly, but I appreciate the sentiment nonetheless.

Seeing as how today is the day of chocolate and indulgence, I decided to indulge with some ribs.  I haven’t mentioned it too much on here yet (don’t worry, it’s coming!), but ribs are kind of my favorite food ever, and Friday ribday (aka #fribday) is most definitely A Thing.

I thought I’d take the concept of chocolate and indulgence, and translate it to a barbecue sauce.  This is what I came up with…

You will need:

  • 1C tomato sauce
  • 1C orange juice
  • 6-7 oz. tomato paste
  • 1/3C white wine vinegar (or any vinegar)
  • 2T cocoa powder
  • 2T fish sauce
  • 2t onion powder
  • 2t garlic powder
  • 1t sea salt
  • 1t chili powder
  • 1/2t smoked paprika
  • 1/2t black pepper

You need to:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a pan; bring to a boil on the stovetop, and reduce to simmer until desired thickness.

This had a really interesting flavor that I wasn’t sure about when I was tasting it on its own, but when slathered on the ribs that had already been rubbed, it was delicious.

A Valentine’s Day well-spent.
